“Dearly beloved, we have gathered here today to get through this thing called life” a famous line from Minnesota legend Prince could fit with a team’s so called promise that’s up in the air the Minnesota Timberwolves. Last week the wolves finally parted ways with defensive genius head coach Tom Thibodeau after a few seasons as head coach and president of basketball operations.
Thibodeau’s tenure in Minnesota was rocky to say the least. From his issues with owner Glen Taylor, to his shaky relationship with the future of the franchise center Karl Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins, to his poor handling of the Jimmy Butler situation add on a losing record and start to this season all lead to his departure and leave this franchise with no certain direction going forward. So what is or could be the Timberwolves future? Let me throw some possible ideas that salvage this team’s future and make it bright.
Let’s start with the coaching position, currently Ryan Saunders son of wolves great coach the late Flip Saunders is the current coach and I feel the franchise should go in this direction keeping Ryan Saunders as the coach where you can begin to build the future with him, Towns and Wiggins and change the culture of the franchise.
Next is a sort of my inner fan speaking of this idea but hiring wolves legend and icon Kevin Garnett to be with the franchise as a scout or a consultant of sorts to work closely with Towns, Wiggins and the team. Garnett’s knowledge and legacy could do wonders for the young and impressionable talent helping them reach their potential.Last but not least is a change to upper management. If Glen Taylor is in charge then the team needs a true basketball mind in the front office who can build the roster to be competitive in the very competitive western conference. If current GM Scott Layden is given the ability to do so then the future can be salvage but if not then maybe bringing another GM and this name is a far fetch idea but former Cleveland Cavaliers GM David Griffin could do wonders for the wolves and put them on the right track.
Regardless this season may be a disappointment for this young team but this has the ability to bounce back and be a possible contender in the future if they make smart decisions this off season and in the upcoming NBA draft. One day the Minnesota Timberwolves will live up to some of the promise they have and not flounder any longer.
