1999 called. The Knicks are back in the Finals, and the Spurs are waiting for them again. Last time, Tim Duncan ended New York’s dream in five games. This time, Victor Wembanyama has other ideas. So does Jalen Brunson. Buckle up.

X-Factor of the Finals: Can the Spurs Handle the Moment?

Can San Antonio’s youth, athleticism, and aggression overcome New York’s rest and experience? Will the bright lights of Madison Square Garden affect a Spurs team making its first Finals appearance together? Can the trio of De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper do enough defensively to slow down Jalen Brunson when games inevitably tighten in the fourth quarter?

Pivotal Player of the Finals: Karl-Anthony Towns

Despite an outstanding postseason, I still have reservations about Towns in the biggest moments. How KAT performs offensively will directly impact how much Victor Wembanyama can dominate defensively. Can Towns finally silence critics like me on the biggest stage of his career, or will he reinforce every concern that’s followed him throughout his time in the league?

Prediction: Spurs in 7

I’ve gone back and forth on this series more than any matchup this postseason. Part of me wants to see Jalen Brunson complete his incredible journey and bring a championship back to New York and honestly, I really don’t want the KAT stans to become utterly insufferable on my timeline and in my life. The Knicks fanbase has waited a long time for a moment like this.

The other part of me keeps coming back to one thing: Victor Wembanyama. As much as this feels like New York’s story, it also feels like the basketball world is witnessing the beginning of something much bigger. There are moments when great players announce themselves to the sport. This feels like one of them.

The comparison that keeps coming to mind is Independence Day except this time the aliens isn’t invading Earth. He’s taking over the NBA. I think the Knicks push San Antonio to the absolute limit, Brunson has his moments, and Madison Square Garden delivers an unforgettable Finals atmosphere. But in the end, I’m betting on the fearless young Spurs to spoil the party and begin a new era.

Spurs in 7. Victor Wembanyama wins Finals MVP.
